Emergence of strawberry cake
The history of strawberry cakes takes us down to the golden historical ages when the cakes were started to be produced and weren’t very popular. The first ever strawberry cake recipe appeared in an English cookbook by a very renowned British baker. Ever since then, people started to know the other uses of strawberry and started using it as a raw material in the manufacturing of cakes as well. In the United States, the strawberry cakes and pastries were produced during the time of summer and were consumed usually during the celebration of summer fruit harvest. With the growing trend of strawberry cakes and pastries all around the United States, it wasn’t very late until that the flavors travelled to France and that French pastry chefs started to produce strawberry shortcakes, pastries and puddings in their own special way. They started to combine slices of ripped strawberries along with whipped cream to stuff them inside the cake and a mixture of strawberry jam and whipped cream as an icing on top of the cake.
Elements of the strawberry cake
The gourmet looks delicious but it takes a long procedure to prepare it. Initially, the ripped and juicy strawberries are picked and sliced and mixed with sugar and allowed to sit for an hour or more until the strawberries have surrendered a great deal of their juice. The juice so extracted is used as a binding component along with the dry ingredients which include flour, sugar, raw strawberries, strawberry jam, flavours, butter and eggs. The base is prepared and covered with a thick layer of strawberries, juice and whipped cream typically flavoured with sugar and vanilla. The inside of the cake is usually medium in consistency, stuffed with strawberries and other nuts can also be added as per choice. The outer appearance of the cake is pinkish red in colour, usually iced with soft cream and decorated with strawberry slices or almond shavings. The outer appearance can be customised with white cream to add contrast to the red base. Eggs can be removed on special demands.
Considering the history of strawberry cakes, they aren’t taken to lavish occasions but at small gatherings at houses or clubs. The characteristic red color of the cake symbolizes love and is usually taken as a gift on Valentine’s Day to celebrate love. These cakes aren’t prepared in huge quantities because of scarce availability of strawberries and are therefore high in prices. However, In Japan, the strawberry cakes are a popular Christmas treat and huge cakes are prepared on special demands. In other parts of the world strawberry cakes are consumed as a short cake desert over a cup of tea or coffee. The strawberries are highly perishable in nature and therefore are very risky to store in large numbers. For the same reason, chefs and bakers have started substituting fresh strawberries to strawberry jam. No compromise on the taste and quality is made but it is still advisable to purchase fresh strawberry cake and try not to store it and consume it in no time after the purchase.
